1) Space related:

  • ISRO to launch 103 satellites at one go:
  • Out of 103, 100 belongs to foreign
  • It is to attract commercial space market
  • PM’s ambitious South Asian Satellite Project to be held on March
  • South Asian Satellite Project:
    • Earlier it was known as SAARC satellite, after facing stiff resistance Pakistan it has been renamed
    • It has been announced as a part of ‘neighbour first policy’ in 18th SAARC summit at Nepal and will benefit the members in communication and telemedicine (through communication-meteorology satellite)
    • Afghanistan and Bangladesh have not pledged so far.


2) India – China:

  • India’s proposal to ban Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar at UN but China decided to veto to India’s proposal
  • P5 members of UNSC: USA, UK, France, Russia and China
  • USA, UK, France are supporters where as Russia did nothing
  • Recent issues:
    • China Pakistan Economic corridor
    • India’s invitations to Uighur, Falun Gong and Tibetan activists
      • India retaliated against China for blocking JeM chief issue by offering Visa to Uyghur leader Dolkun Isa.
      • Falun Gong is a spiritual practice
    • Expulsion of Chinese journalists from Mumbai
    • Chinese block on NSG membership for India
  • Earlier also China opposed India’s proposal for UN to designate Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin and Abdul Rehman Makki and Azam Cheema of LeT as terrorist
  • UNSC’s Resolution 1267:
    • It confine to Al Qaida, osama bin Laden and/or the Taliban after attacks on US embassies at several places
    • If sanctions are imposed on person or entity countries should freeze funds, financial assets of respective
    • It is immune from Judicial Reviews
  • Criticism on UNSC:
    • Its working methods based on the principles of unanimity and anonymity


3) 104th Indian Science Congress Association:

  • Theme: S&T for National Development
  • Major Products:
    • Product for detecting markers for Acute Myocardial Infarction
      • Acute Myocardial Infarction is a cardiac muscle damage that accompanies heart attack
      • It is important and can detect multiple markers in single reaction and reduce cost for test
    • Soil moisture sensors
      • It is still in prototype model
  • Problems:
    • Prototype models are not converted into product
    • Even if it converted into product marketing is main drawback
    • Low investing in R&D
    • Not investing in product manufacturing facilities


4) Bunkar Mitra:

  • It is a helpline for Handloom Weavers
  • Helpline is a mix of technology, Youth and Tradition
  • It is single point of contact to resolve all grievances and problems for Weavers across the country


5) Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY):

    • Improving operational efficiency of DISCOMS
      • Through mandatory usage of smart metering
      • Usage of Energy efficient equipments like LED bulbs etc
      • Reduction in AT&C losses
      • Eliminate the gap between Average Revenue Realise (ARR) and Average Cost of Supply (ACS)
    • Reduction of cost of power
      • Supply of cheaper domestic coal


  • Coal linkage rationalisation


    • Liberal coal swaps from inefficient to efficient plants
    • Coal price rationalisation based on Gross Calorific Value (GCV)
    • Supply of washed and crushed coal
    • Faster completion of transmission lines
  • Reduction in interest cost of DISCOMS
  • Enforcing financial discipline on DISCOMS through alignment with State finances
  • Features:
    • Discom debt should be adopted by states to reduce its burden 75% in first year and 50%, 25% after that
    • This debt should not be calculated in fiscal deficit of states
    • States can issue as SDL (State Development Loan) bonds in the market or to respective banks which will generate interest
    • Renewable Purchase Obligation should be adopted
      • RPO is buying electricity from green energy sources (like Solar) or Buying Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) from the market by electricity distribution companies and large consumer of power

Adoption is optional for states, for those states who adopted Additional/ Priority funding through Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DUGJY), Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), Power Sector Development Fund(PSDF) and will provide additional coal at notified prices
